The Best Tips for Organizing Your Move
First, before you begin, you need to know how much money you should save before relocating. You’ll want to save a good amount of money beforehand, and then somewhere around 6 – 7 weeks before the relocation, you’ll want to:
- Locate 3 moving companies in your area;
- Verify that they’re well-rated, insured, and licensed;
- Obtain non-binding estimates;
- Compare prices versus services rendered;
You’ll want to ask a lot of questions when getting your estimate, such as:
- Is packing included?
- Are you licensed and insured?
- Can you list all services included in the price estimate?
- How long is the estimate valid?
- Do you offer estimates on-site?
Once you do this, you’ll have a much easier time working through the next steps:
5 Weeks Until Relocation
During this week, you’ll want to do a few things:
- Downsize: Donate or get rid of any items that you no longer want. You can even hold a garage sale to make some money here.
- Create a Room-by-Room Analysis. Now, go through each room and create a full inventory of the items you have. Also, be sure to separate any items that fall into the downsize category.
Downsizing will help you make the relocation easier and may even save you money on your big move.
4 Weeks Until Relocation
Your moving date is approaching rapidly, and it’s now time to get everything together. You have a lot of items to pack, and this means getting a few things:
- Boxes – make sure to get a variety of sizes
- Packing tape
- Packing bubbles
- Tissue paper
- Plastic sheets
- Box cutters and scissors
- Stickers
- Markers
- Labels
If you have large items or a big wardrobe to move, you can often find custom wardrobe boxes or crates. Labels are going to be even more important because they’ll help you transition into your new space easier because you know what room each box belongs to.
Note: You can skip this step if you pay for packing through moving services.
